    Evolution and relationships of the conifer seed cone telemachus: Evidence from the triassic of antarctica

    The seed cone Telemachus is known from several Triassic localities in Gondwana. New specimens from two localities in Antarctica provide additional information about the type species, Telemachus elongatus, based on details of morphology and anatomy revealed by using a modified transfer technique on the compressed plants. Seed cones of T. elongatus are up to 6.0 cm long and characterized by conspicuous, elongate bracts. A second Antarctic species, described here as Telemachus antarcticus, is segregated, based on a shorter bract and differences in cone size. Newly recognized features of the genus include the shape, size, and disposition of the ovules; vascularization of the ovuliferous complex; and scale and bract histology. As a result of this new information, it is now possible to compare Telemachus with the permineralized Middle Triassic conifer seed cone Parasciadopitys from the Central Transantarctic Mountains. The similarities between the two genera make it possible to relate organs in different preservational modes and to develop a more complete concept for this widely distributed Gondwana conifer. Placing the Telemachus plant within a phylogenetic context makes it possible to evaluate the relationship with other so-called transitional conifers, an informal group that has been interpreted as intermediate between Paleozoic and modern conifers.Fil: Escapa, Ignacio Hernán.     Integrated testing and verification system for research flight software design document

    The NASA Langley Research Center is developing the MUST (Multipurpose User-oriented Software Technology) program to cut the cost of producing research flight software through a system of software support tools. The HAL/S language is the primary subject of the design. Boeing Computer Services Company (BCS) has designed an integrated verification and testing capability as part of MUST. Documentation, verification and test options are provided with special attention on real time, multiprocessing issues. The needs of the entire software production cycle have been considered, with effective management and reduced lifecycle costs as foremost goals. Capabilities have been included in the design for static detection of data flow anomalies involving communicating concurrent processes. Some types of ill formed process synchronization and deadlock also are detected statically

    Images of neutral Hydrogen 21cm absorption and radio continuum emission at 1.4 GHz from Mrk 273 were made using the Very Long Baseline Array and Very Large Array. These images reveal a gas disk associated with the northern nuclear region with a diameter of 0.5'' (370 pc), at an inclination angle of 53deg. The radio continuum emission is composed of a diffuse component plus a number of compact sources. This morphology resembles those of nearby, lower luminosity starburst galaxies. These images provide strong support for the hypothesis that the luminosity of the northern source is dominated by an extreme compact starburst. The HI 21cm absorption shows an east-west gradient in velocity of 450 km/s across 0.3'' (220 pc), implying an enclosed mass of 2e9 M_solar, comparable to the molecular gas mass. The brightest of the compact sources may indicate radio emission from an active nucleus (AGN), but this source contributes only 3.8% to the total flux density of the northern nuclear region. The HI 21cm absorption toward the southeast radio nucleus suggests infall at 200 km/s on scales < 40 pc, and the southwest near IR nucleus is not detected in high resolution radio continuum images.Comment: standard AAS format, 23 pages, 5 figures, fixed figure.     Guidelines in preparing computer-generated plots for NASA technical reports with the LaRC graphics output system

    To response to a need for improved computer-generated plots that are acceptable to the Langley publication process, the LaRC Graphics Output System has been modified to encompass the publication requirements, and a guideline has been established. This guideline deals only with the publication requirements of computer-generated plots. This report explains the capability that authors of NASA technical reports can use to obtain publication--quality computer-generated plots or the Langley publication process. The rules applied in developing this guideline and examples illustrating the rules are included

    Immune compromise in HIV-1/HTLV-1 coinfection with paradoxical resolution of CD4 lymphocytosis during antiretroviral therapy: a case report

    Human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) and human T lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1) infections have complex effects on adaptive immunity, with specific tropism for, but contrasting effects on, CD4 T lymphocytes: depletion with HIV-1, proliferation with HTLV-1. Impaired T lymphocyte function occurs early in HIV-1 infection but opportunistic infections (OIs) rarely occur in the absence of CD4 lymphopenia. In the unusual case where a HIV-1 infected individual with a high CD4 count presents with recurrent OIs, a clinician is faced with the possibility of a second underlying comorbidity. We present a case of pseudo-adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) in HIV-1/HTLV-1 coinfection where the individual fulfilled Shimoyama criteria for chronic ATLL and had pulmonary Mycobacterium kansasii, despite a high CD4 lymphocyte count. However, there was no evidence of clonal T-cell proliferation by T-cell receptor gene rearrangement studies nor of monoclonal HTLV-1 integration by high-throughput sequencing. Mutually beneficial interplay between HIV-1 and HTLV-1, maintaining high level HIV-1 and HTLV-1 viremia and proliferation of poorly functional CD4 cells despite chronicity of infection is a postulated mechanism. Despite good microbiological response to antimycobacterial therapy, the patient remained systemically unwell with refractory anemia. Subsequent initiation of combined antiretroviral therapy led to paradoxical resolution of CD4 T lymphocytosis as well as HIV-1 viral suppression and decreased HTLV-1 proviral load. This is proposed to be the result of attenuation of immune activation post-HIV virological control. This case illustrates the importance of screening for HTLV-1 in HIV-1 patients with appropriate clinical presentation and epidemiological risk factors and explores mechanisms for the complex interactions on HIV-1/HTLV-1 adaptive immunity
